Before Renting: Questions to Ask When Touring a Facility

Before you rent a storage unit with us or at any other facility, make sure to get these questions answered:

  • Are there regular security patrols at night or just cameras?

  • Am I able to unload my vehicle at my unit?

  • What day of the month should I expect rent to be due?

  • Are there any administrative fees or other one-time fees I should know about?

  • Does your facility perform regular pest control?

  • What is the move-out process like?

How to Choose a Storage Unit Size

Make sure you get the space you need

Choosing the right size unit for your needs can save you a lot of money and headaches. If you choose a unit that’s too small to save money, now you can’t fit everything inside. If you choose a unit that’s much larger than you need, you’re paying for space you aren’t using.

While it’s difficult to give one-size-fits-all guidance on choosing your storage unit’s size, we are happy to help if you contact us today. We’ve also assembled some generic advice here to get you moving in the right direction, and you can also always take a look at our storage unit Size Guide.

  • Always measure the longest side of the largest items to know your minimum dimensions

  • Make sure to factor walking space into your measurements—you need room to maneuver!

  • Include the height in your estimates. Feel free to ask us about the vertical measurements of a given unit.

  • Consider how often you’ll access. A larger unit will allow for better organization if you need items frequently.

Do I Need Climate-Controlled Storage in Duarte?

The short answer: no, you can easily manage humidity concerns without paying a premium for climate-controlled storage.

It’s reasonable to be worried about the effect of extreme temperatures and humidity on your belongings. However, there are affordable ways to counter humidity while maintaining the convenience of a drive-up unit. Most home improvement stores carry products (such as Damp Rid or Camp Check) that absorb moisture and will do a great job at keeping your items safe during humid seasons. You can also use pallets to keep your items off the ground for better protection.

These methods are often superior to the average climate control offered by storage facilities, which aren’t guaranteed to have actual dehumidifiers and may only regulate temperatures.

Packing Your Storage Unit Efficiently

Here are a few quick tips to make sure your items are packed properly and your unit effectively organized:

  • Label boxes so that you can easily find what you need later

  • Leaving walking space to navigate through your unit

  • Use moisture absorbers to protect against humidity

  • Place boxes and furniture on pallets to keep off the floor

  • Disassemble furniture if possible before storage

  • Place heavier items (like books) in smaller boxes

Frequently asked questions about renting self storage in Duarte, CA

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about self storage and about our own storage here at Mt. Olive Self Storage.

Hopefully you can find what you need here in these FAQs, but our team is always happy to help if you need some more information. Find out how to contact us at our Contact page if you want some hands-on assistance before renting. We’re always here to give you a helping hand!

How much does a storage unit cost in Duarte?

Storage units can range in cost based on many factors, including size, unit type, and even the time of year. While our storage unit rates page has our most up-to-date unit rates, you can expect anywhere from around $60 or so for a 5x5 unit up to $300 for a large 10x20 (200 square-foot) unit.

How often do self storage rents increase throughout the year?

Many facilities will raise rates as often as every few months. This can lead to an increase of as much as 3 to 4 times a year. Here at Mt. Olive Self Storage, we don’t raise rates more often than once a year.

We respect our neighbors. So while we too need to keep up with rising costs, we limit our potential increases to once a year because it’s what we think is the right thing to do for you.

How to understand my rental agreement

A self storage rental agreement looks like a big, complicated, and potentially scary document, but it’s really simple. We’re happy to go over it with you in detail if you want to pay our office a visit, but we’ll do our best to cover the highlights for you as well.

Each rental agreement is a month-to-month agreement, and there is nothing locking you into your rental. You can move out at any time without penalties. The rental agreement outlines things like conduct when at the facility (basic rules) as well as what you shouldn’t store in the unit.

Does a month-to-month agreement mean I need to stay for an entire month if I don’t move out in time?

Not at all! This month-to-month rental structure is actually how we keep things as flexible as possible for you. You can move out at any time without worrying about being locked in.

Do I Need Insurance for My Storage Unit in Duarte?

Yes, at Mt. Olive Self Storage, you are required to have insurance to rent. We think about insurance when renting a car or an apartment, but most people forget about it when renting a storage unit. This is an important way to protect yourself against potential damage. We partner with an insurance provider, but you can also make use of your own homeowners' insurance if your policy covers your storage unit. Make sure to present us with proof of insurance if you opt to use your own insurance plan.
